When you were little, did the word “Empowerment” ever cross your mind? Did you think that it was crucial for you to master Empowerment in order to live a successful life when you were older? I am sure that for many of us, we grew up being more familiar with “Que Sera Sera, whatever will be, will be” rather than to be captains of our own ship, master of our own life.
Being the youngest in my family, I grew up feeling that my older siblings were a lot more capable, strong and powerful. I was used to getting hand-me downs and being told that children (especially the youngest) should be seen and not heard. It was often that I was reminded to listen to my older siblings as I was the smallest and least capable. So I thought that it was very normal for me to be an average student and not to have any great dreams or ambitions. I didn’t feel empowered to achieve anything because I didn’t really have any great strengths or abilities. I thought that my life would consist of finishing school, getting a job, finding someone to marry, have children, be a good wife, mother and daughter in law and live happily ever after. Never did I ever think of being Empowered and to chart my own destiny. And all that was to change, when I started working for one of the Empowerment Masters who was a living example of rags to riches.
Teaching people how to manage their time and manage their life was a passion of Dr Venga. His no nonsense, strict disciplinary ways and extreme confidence made one either hide away from him or look up to him in awe & utter admiration. And thus my journey of discovering Engagement, Empowerment and Enhancement began.
“Set your daily, weekly, monthly and yearly goals. Short, medium and long term as well”
“Write everything down. The weakest ink is still stronger than the strongest memory”
“Review everything you do. Ask yourself how can you do it better the next time”
“Plan your day the night before. Set at least 3 goals to achieve for the day. Plan at least 60% of your day”
“Plan your work and Work your plan”
“Think and Question what you’re doing. Don’t do things for the sake of doing”
“Do anything that you do 100% to your ability. Otherwise don’t do it at all”
“Never say I don’t know. Go find the answers till you know”
These were some of the valuable lessons I learnt from him overnight which changed my life forever. I discovered that if I set my mind to it and I worked hard, I could do a lot and I learnt what my natural strengths were. Suddenly, I began to feel empowered. And I could communicate my wants and needs and be a voice that would be listened to. Of course I fell and hit brick walls many times due to my naivety and unrealistic dreams, till I became wiser and more experienced.
One of the first lessons I learnt on Empowerment was that every person has the ability to be empowered. And rightfully that should be inculcated in every child, together with the right values, so that they grow up knowing how they want to build a happy life for themselves and at the same time be aware of how they are going to contribute towards making this world a better place to live in.
