There is this question in people’s mind at times why chocolate is loved by so many people in the world. Why is there even a Chocolate Lover Society? What is so good about it? Some people just don’t find the wow factor about it. I did some research of my own and here are my findings as to why chocolate is something that many people get crazy about.
Most of the readers probably have watched the movie titled “Charlie and The Chocolate Factory”. In that movie we get to see how in love the chocolate community is with chocolate to a point people were dying to get into the factory just to get a tour around the famous chocolate factory “Wonka”. From that movie itself we can see how chocolate can either bring people together or create a dispute among each other. Before we see why chocolate is very adored by so many people, let’s see how it was actually made in the first place -the process- in a simplified version.
Chocolate’s story begins from the Theobroma cacao tree and dates back to 450BC. According to an article from the site thepruceeats.com , Theobroma cacao means “food of the Gods” and this name reflects both the heavenly taste of chocolate and the reverence Mayan and Aztec cultures had for this divine food. From that tree they extract cocoa bean from the cocoa seed and it goes through some fermentations and heating process until it becomes a chocolate bar. The fruity pulp that surrounds the cocoa bean is used to make chocolate drinks and desserts. The process is actually very long and complicate however I just wrote a very simplified version here. And the largest producer of cocoa these days are Ivory Coast and Ghana.
So now we know how it is made let us see why it is adore by many around the world no matter the race, religion or gender. According to explainthatstuff.com a research done in 2007 by psychologist David Lewis, letting the chocolate slowly dissolve in our mouths increases the brain activity and hear rate as it recreates the sense of passionate kissing but lasts 4 times longer! And science is never wrong, hahahahaha!!
There are a few stimulants in chocolate that could be the reason why chocolate can be so addictive and tasty and those stimulants are theobromine, phenylethylamine, and caffeine (in very small amounts). Another interesting fact that might catch your attention would be that there is a similar chemical found in marijuana – anandamide THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) – that is also found in chocolate and is called anandamide. This was back in 1996 when the researches at the Neuroscience Institute in San Diego, California found out about this. The chemical is also knows as the feel-good chemical. Usually anandamide is broken down as soon as it is produced but the San Diego chemist speculated that the natural anandamide in chocolate lasts longer in our brain which in results gives a longer-lasting “chocolate high”. So the chocolate might not have the same active chemicals as marijuana but it does give the same sense of getting high.
Other scientists have also carried out experiment on how our brain sees chocolate. In 2001 an experiment was done by Dana Small and her colleagues as part of their eating disorder research, they were told to eat chocolates till their hearts are full. From their experiment they found that as they began eating chocolate and were enjoying it a set of brain structures were active specifically the subcallosal region, caudomedial orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), insula/operculum, striatum and midbrain. After a while, when they were getting almost full and had too much of chocolate already a totally new set of brain structures were active specifically para hippocampal gyrus, caudolateral OFC and prefrontal regions. This clearly shows at times though you might be enjoying the chocolate, your brain thinks otherwise.
Therefore in conclusion, there are many more reasons as to why people love chocolate and I could go deeper into this but I’m just going to stop here I guess. These reasons could also be a factor as to why people love buying the Chocolate Brownies that have chocolate chunks infused inside the brownies itself by Pilot’s Gourmet. It is as if the toppings that were on top of the brownies are now inside. I feel like it is the stimulant that is in the chocolate – anandamide – that attracts people to come back for more and makes the brownies irresistible. So all in all, there is a great reason why people are chocolate lovers cause having chocolate is truly an amazing experience. As long as you brush your teeth before you go to bed, you should be fine. No dentist shall be coming after you to pull your teeth out. LOL!
