The shea tree has naturally inhabited West Africa for centuries, stretching from Senegal to Sudan and up to the foothills of Ethiopia. African history documents mention jars of a rich butter used for skin and hair care being transported during Cleopatra’s reign. Even the Queen of Sheba is said to have used it!
The tree was used to make coffins for the early kings in Africa, and the butter extracted from the nuts was used for its healing and skin care properties. The tree is also considered sacred by many tribes in Africa. It is still extensively used in Africa to protect the skin and hair from the harsh sun and dry winds. While kneading the extracted oil with the hand was popular earlier, advancements in technology have led to different methods, such as clay filtering and using hexane for the final extraction of shea butter. A few tribes also blend it with palm oil and use it for cooking purposes. This is mostly seen in Northern Nigeria.

Gladdeskin happened when two sisters were in the quest of finding a natural substitute without any needs of extra additives and preservatives, and which can be applied safely on skin and hair.
After a scrupulous research, we meticulously picked our main product, the Shea butter, a glorifying natural ingredient that has been gifted to us by the mother nature.
It is vastly used in high end beauty brands to small business owners like us. We reached out several Shea butter distributors who have their own farm to learn about the Shea butter market and it was just shocking and saddening.
Traditional Shea butter churning process consume immense about of labor hours. Children works to help their parents in various ways to reduce the work load. What's even saddening is 'NOT EVERY FARMER IS WEALTHY ENOUGH TO GET ORGANIC OR FAIR TRADE' certifications. So small range to medium range farmers have very less opportunities to export their Shea butter and make money since, us, the rest of the world mostly prefer the 'labeled' products because they're more reliable.
We did years of research, meeting different people and trying out their Shea butter from their home farms and compared it with high end beauty brands Shea butters and the results were undoubtedly amazing. Whether they have labels or not, the natural Shea butter that freshly made from farms, in fact, was rich in its texture, smell and of course it's benefits. We support these smaller farms, we support these African brothers and sisters and most importantly small farmers.
Shea butter has many incredible benefits that anybody can enjoy. Our customers are including mothers of babies to cute old folks and they all are happy with the changes our Shea butter does to their skin problems. With gladdeskin, our vision is to provide a healthier natural substitute for our body while helping out our hardworking small farmers and we are truly thanking you for being a part of our noble journey.
